Online News Stories Last Only 36 Hours

This article came from Micro Persuasion.

This is a fascinating research project that's long overdue. According to a study conducted by a physics researcher at Notre Dame, an online news story will be barely read by anyone 36 hours after it was first posted. The PhysicsWeb article (thanks digg) says that "the short life of a news item -- combined with random visiting patterns of readers -- implies that people could miss a significant fraction of news by not visiting the portal when a new document is first displayed." Rocket scientists can download the full research here (PDF)

Wimbledon Wired with RSS

This article came from Micro Persuasion

It's still a couple of weeks away but Wimbledon 2006 already has an RSS feed.

This is the wave of the future for sporting events. Not only can sports enthuisists stay connected as events transpire, but this a good way to drum-up support among a tech crowd, and internally, to gauge interest and collect statistics about visitors and how they are finding the Wimbledon site.

Online travel brand hijacking ‘out of control’

This article came from Travel Mole

Increasing numbers of UK travel companies are having their brand names hijacked by rivals in pay-for-click advertising.

A survey by e-commerce firm Nucleus into online travel companies' use of pay-per-click to intercept search engine enquiries for their competitors confirmed a "dramatic escalation" in brand interception since last year.

Google agrees to censor results in China

This article came from MSNBC though it is not current news, this is the first that I've learned about this!

Search giant gives in to free-speech limits in return for better access

SHANGHAI, China - Google Inc. launched a search engine in China on Wednesday that censors material about human rights, Tibet and other topics sensitive to Beijing — defending the move as a trade-off granting Chinese greater access to other information.

Media and Full Text Feeds Should Lock Lips

This article came from Micro Persuasion

The following is my column in this week's issue of Advertising Age.

Welcome to the subscription era.

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) represents the third major shift in how consumers interact with the Web, after the first Internet epoch, browsing, and the second, search. RSS allows regular readers of a publication to sign up for regular news feeds, delivered their mainstream media. While that's the greatest beneficiary of the RSS revolution, disappointingly, few companies are fully maximizing it yet.

Office Gossip

Okay - so there has been a couple of juicy pieces of Spotnana office gossip circulating recently. First there was the hoax of the Malayisian vacation went on by NP and Porus - complete fabrication. Then there is the scandalous display of affection that took place on the first floor of the building, reportedly between a certain Spotnana employee and a certain Infrahealth employee - names shall be withheld to protect the privacy of the guilty!
